National Observance of the 74th United Nations Day 2019

The National Observance of the 74th United Nations Day – 2019, was held on Saturday, 26th October, 2018, at the Grand Ballroom, Saffron Beach Hotel, Wadduwa, organized by the United Nations Association of Sri Lanka (UNASL), in association with the UN Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Development Programme of the United Nations office in Sri Lanka.

There were over 600 persons (including approximately 500 students and teachers) who participated at this glamourous and colourful event which saw the Sri Lanka Army Dance Troupe in attendance.

The Chief Guest on this occasion was the Resident Co-ordinator of the United Nations in Sri Lanka, Ms. Hanaa Singer.

In addition, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as other Ministries, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Members of the United Nations and its specialized agencies, Intellectuals, Professionals, Teachers, Students and the General Public, also participated at this event.

The welcome address was delivered by Maj Gen Upul Perera, President of the UNASL and the Key Note Address was made by Miss. G.H.M.K.T. Herath from St. Anthony’s Girls College, Kandy, the winner of the UNASL Annual Speech Contest conducted by the UNASL. Her address was on “Air Pollution” which was the United Nations theme for the year 2019.

Cash Prizes and Trophies were awarded to the winners and runner-ups of the various competitions held during the year, which included a Speech Contest, Essay Writing Contest(Individual and Group),etc. Kegalle College was adjudged the Best UNASL Study Circle and the Teacher-in-Charge was adjudged the Best Teacher of the year, Winners of the UNASL Interschool Masterminds Competition 2019 which was held in the morning on the same day, were also awarded their Cash Prizes, Trophies, Medals and Certificates.

The Vote-of-Thanks was delivered by Mr.. Errol Smith, Secretary General of the UNASL.
